Gentle Introduction to Information Theoretic Model Selection Criteria and Their Application in Clinical Trials

1 Dr. Chen Xi worked at Eli Lilly and Company, and he is currently working at Pfizer, Inc. as a consultant specialized in clinical trial analysis and SAS programming support. His view does not reflect the business practice of any of his client firms. He can be reached through E-Mail at [email protected] or [email protected]. Information theoretic model selection criteria such as AIC, BIC and ICOMP have important impacts on general statistical analysis, and they may change the strategy in dealing with application problems. This paper will briefly summarize how they were derived, how they differ from the methodology used in conventional statistical analysis, and how they were implemented in SAS software. Their potential applications in clinical trial analysis will also be briefly discussed. This paper is not a technical presentation, but only for beginner tutoring purpose.
